The Vidas Negras com Deficiência Importam (VNDI) Movement was invited by Minority Rights Group to carry out a research project to observe how the social markers of race, gender and disability are present in the different forms of discrimination in the lives of Black people with disabilities, including those belonging to traditional communities, such as quilombolas.
What is the goal of this project?
The general goal of this project is to propose a measure for the full protection of the rights of marginalized people with disabilities who suffer intersectional discrimination in Brazil. We believe that the intersection between the forms of oppression of racism and ableism has been recognized through social justice movements that aim to build an anti-racist, anti-ableist and inclusive society for all. Thus, this project highlights the systemic racism experienced by Black and brown Brazilians with disabilities, neurodivergent people and their families at the international and national levels.
A brief overview of what we have done so far:
- Visits have already been made to organizations of people with disabilities that provide public and private services for this population, in order to present the project and collect information.
- During the election process we drew up a commitment letter for progressive candidacies committed to the disability and racial agendas, so that they would formalize their commitment to the movement and to Black people with disabilities.
